Why our apps cost once

2 min read

Most apps today ask for a monthly fee. Sometimes that's fair. Often it's a habit borrowed from software that genuinely costs money to run, applied to apps that don't.

Our rule is simple. If an app runs on your device and costs us little to keep alive, you pay once. If a feature needs a server that bills us every month, like syncing or sending notifications to your phone, that feature can carry a subscription. The rest of the app doesn't.

Why it works for a small studio

We keep our running costs close to zero. Apps that do their work on your device don't need much infrastructure, and that's a design choice, not an accident. Low costs mean we don't need every user paying every month for the studio to keep going.

It also keeps us honest. A subscription rewards keeping you inside an app. A one-time price rewards making it good enough to buy. We'd rather be judged on the second.

What that looks like in practice

  • A free version you can actually use, not a trial with a timer.
  • A one-time upgrade for the features that make it better.
  • A subscription only for features with ongoing server costs, and we'll say which ones and why.

It won't fit every app we ever make. But it's where we start.
